In Piazza della Scala had been formerly the church of Santa Maria della Scala, built in 1381. It had got its name from the wife of Bernabo Visconti, Regina della Scala.
After the former Teatro Regio Ducale, built mainly from wood, on 26 February 1776 was burned down, the Milanese Duchess Maria Teresa of Habsburg planned to build a new theatre.
For the new opera theatre the church of Santa Maria della Scala had been ripped off and on its place the new La Scala Theatre has been built. The project was committed to the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini.
