Who comes to Milan for the first time should not go by subway straight to Duomo Square, but get off at an earlier stop, at Piazza Cordusio. From Piazza Cordusio take the pedestrian passage through Via Mercanti to approach the Cathedral and you will see from Piazza Mercanti the Cathedral growing out between the palaces.
It is an incomparable experience to see that enormous white marble cathedral in full splendor with its hundreds "spills turrets".

A special attraction is the roof of Milan cathedral. With lifts or rising 200 steps you access the roof terraces and you find yourself between 4000 Guglie, these peaks of figures and ornaments, each of them is a unique piece.

Similar to the "campo santo" in Pisa also in Milan should be created a Holy square. However, for this project there wasn’t enough space in the center of Milan.
The project by Giuseppe Mengoni, also architect of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, prvided the demolition of the dense construction around the cathedral from the Middle Ages. The cathedral square was realized 1865-1873.
The center of the cathedral square is dominated by the equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Also the Gallery beginning at the Cathedral Square and “Lounge” of Milan is named after the Italian king Vittorio Emanuele II. ruling from 1861 to 1876.
From the cathedral left hand side, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II connects Piazza Duomo with Piazza della Scala. The central cross with beautiful floor mosaics became the "Salon of Milan". Surrounded by cafes and designer boutiques, the "Ottagono" is a meeting place and venue for small Milanese artistic performances.
